Description
The Pediatric clerkship is a two-month rotation. One month is spent on an inpatient unit, either at Comer Children's Hospital or La Rabida Children's Hospital. The other month is spent at an outpatient pediatrics office, some of which are off-site. During the outpatient month, students rotate through the newborn nursery for three days and spend one half-day per week in a sub-specialty clinic. Throughout the rotation, students meet with a faculty preceptor one time per week in small groups to discuss common pediatric problems in a case-based format. There are also two one-hour lectures weekly and all scheduled conferences for the residents also welcome students.
Clinical Evaluation
A student’s clinical performance is evaluated by faculty members at the inpatient and outpatient training sites where the student works. They are asked to evaluate the student in several areas, including the student’s general fund of knowledge, their proficiency in the history and physical exam, the quality of their written and oral presentation skills, deductive reasoning, communication, and professionalism. In addition, each student is required to have a patient encounter directly observed by a faculty member, who will watch them perform a history and physical exam.
Objectives
- To learn evaluation of pediatric patients in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
- To learn development of children from birth through adolescence.
- To obtain practice in performing a pediatric physical examination.
Evaluation of Clinical Clerks
- 25% NBME subject exam
- 75% Clinical Performance (32.5% inpatient, 32.5% outpatient, 10% nursery)
