As the campus begins to thaw out, I know that many first year students are faced with the challenging decision of how to spend their summer vacations. This is the only year you will have complete flexibility on this choice—so be sure to enjoy the freedom of it! You have been presented with a number of opportunities including the Summer Research Program and internships. I would like to add one more option for you to consider. The Alumni Careers Network is a vast database of University alumni willing to discuss their clinical specialty or area of research with you. Take some time to surf the database and email some of our talented graduates. The Alumni Careers Network can be accessed at http://bsdalumni.uchicago.edu/students/. Through the alumni association staff you can also arrange to spend a day or two shadowing an alumnus/a in Chicago or your home town.
