Arthur Vining Davis Grant
In February 2005, the Arthur Vining Davis Foundation awarded close to $200,000 to the Pritzker School of Medicine to support the project “Improving Cross-Cultural Communication through Community Partnerships.” Under the leadership of Dr. Deborah Burnet, Associate Professor of Medicine, Section Chief of General Medicine, and course director of a popular elective that focuses on issues related to inequalities and health, the Pritzker School of Medicine will develop a partnership with the Asian Health Coalition of Illinois to establish an innovative cultural competency elective. The unique collaboration between the faculty at the University of Chicago and the expertise and resources of AHCI, a community based organization serving Chicago’s immigrant communities, will give medical students the experience and training necessary to provide compassionate treatment for patients from diverse backgrounds. This elective will serve as an innovative model of cultural competency education for our own institution as well as other academic medical centers.
