Professor Highlighted in ABC Promotion of Black History Month

February 6, 2008 – Dr. Monica Peek, Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine, is currently highlighted on Chicago’s ABC affiliate (Channel 7). As part of ABC7’s promotion of Black History Month, the station will be playing short features of African American physicians in the Chicago area.

Dr. Peek is recognized for founding Sisters Working it Out, a program designed to empower women in Chicago’s public housing developments to become health educators and health advocates. She is currently funded by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to explore the impact of shared decision-making among African-Americans with diabetes. Dr. Peek is also one of the faculty instructors of the Pritzker School of Medicine Health Care Disparities course. She is actively involved in several community-based organizations, including the Chicago Black Women’s Health Project, the Y-Me National Breast Cancer Organization, and Sisters Network, Inc.
